Used golf balls. No guesswork.

Golfers only lease golf balls. Lease from a new-ball retailer, or from Golf Ball Nut.

Used Golf Ball Grades, Explained

Recycled golf balls: our condition scale

Pristine > Mint > Near Mint > AAA

These grades describe the condition of recycled golf balls in their original factory finish. They do not describe refinished golf balls.

Grade What it means Marks and logos Best for
Pristine Our highest recycled grade. Indistinguishable from new in appearance, but still a used, recycled golf ball—not a new ball. No marks. No logos. Golfers who want our cleanest original-finish ball.
Mint An excellent, nearly new-looking recycled golf ball. A small player mark is possible but not likely. Can contain logos. Golfers who want a near-new look without requiring Pristine.
Near Mint A clean, nearly perfect recycled golf ball with light signs of play. Can have a small player mark. Can contain logos (same logo rule as Mint). Golfers who want excellent playability and appearance at a lower grade than Mint.
AAA A good, playable recycled golf ball with more visible cosmetic wear than Near Mint. Still ready for many more holes. Cosmetic marks and signs of play should be expected. Can contain logos. Value-conscious golfers who care more about play than a nearly new look.

Hit Away: practice only

Hit Away means hit it and forget it. These are practice balls, not balls we recommend for a scored round. Use them for the range, the backyard or practice where losing the ball is part of the plan.

Another way to picture the grades

The grade definitions above are the standard. This is another way to picture them:

  • Pristine: Looks like it rolled straight out of the sleeve. It was probably lost on the first hole.
  • Mint: Probably lost early in play. It could contain a logo.
  • Near Mint: Probably lost around the fifth or sixth hole. It could have a small player mark and a logo, and is still near perfect.
  • AAA: Probably made it through a nine-hole round—and it's ready for many more. It could contain a logo.
  • Hit Away: Hit it and forget it. Practice only.

The story is a shortcut, not a promise that we know how many holes any individual ball was played.

Recycled vs. refinished: separate classes

Recycled

A recycled golf ball has been used, recovered, cleaned, identified and sorted by condition. Its original factory finish stays on the ball. Pristine, Mint, Near Mint and AAA belong to this condition scale.

Refinished

A refinished golf ball starts as a used ball, then goes through a restoration process: the original coating is removed, and the ball is repainted, re-stamped and clear-coated. We label it Refinished so you know exactly what you're buying.

The simple rule: Recycled and refinished are different product classes. Do not put them on one grading scale. Pristine describes a recycled ball's condition; it does not mean refinished, repainted or new.

Buyer FAQ

Are used golf balls worth buying?

Yes, if you want to pay less than new-ball prices and know what condition you're getting. We grade recycled balls so you can choose appearance and value: Pristine at the top, then Mint, Near Mint and AAA. Hit Away is for practice only.

Are Pristine golf balls new?

No. Pristine balls are used, recycled golf balls in their original factory finish. “Indistinguishable from new” describes their appearance. They have no marks and no logos, but they are not sold as new balls.

What is the difference between Pristine and Mint?

Pristine is our highest recycled grade: no marks and no logos, indistinguishable from new. Mint is nearly new-looking; a small player mark is possible but not likely, and Mint can contain logos.

What does Near Mint mean?

Near Mint is a clean, nearly perfect recycled ball with light signs of play. It can have a small player mark and can contain logos (same logo rule as Mint). Picture a ball lost around the fifth or sixth hole.

What does AAA mean?

AAA is a good, playable recycled ball with more visible cosmetic wear than Near Mint. It can contain logos. Picture a ball that made it through nine holes and is ready for many more. It sits below Near Mint and above practice-only Hit Away.

Will my golf balls have company or event logos?

Pristine: no logos. Mint, Near Mint, and AAA can contain logos.

Will used golf balls have player marks or writing on them?

Pristine has no marks. With Mint, a small player mark is possible but not likely. Near Mint can have a small player mark. AAA has more visible cosmetic wear. Hit Away is practice-only.

What is the difference between recycled and refinished golf balls?

Recycled balls keep their original factory finish and are graded by condition. Refinished balls have their original coating removed and are repainted, re-stamped and clear-coated. They are separate product classes, not grades on one scale.

Which used golf ball grade should I buy?

Choose Pristine when you want our cleanest look, with no marks or logos. Choose Mint for a nearly new look when a possible small player mark or logo is acceptable. Choose Near Mint for a nearly perfect ball with light signs of play (logos OK). Choose AAA when value matters more than cosmetics (logos OK). Choose Hit Away for practice only.

How quickly will my order ship, and is shipping free?

Same-day shipping applies to orders placed before 2 PM EST, Monday–Friday (excluding holidays). Standard shipping on eligible golf-ball orders is $7.99 below $69, and free at $69 or more after discounts and before tax, via USPS. Contiguous U.S. only — excludes Alaska, Hawaii, oversized items, and products from third-party partners (including Shank it Golf, Sunday Golf, Caddy Splash, and Golf Stuff Official). Estimated delivery is typically 5–7 business days (as shown on product pages).

Can I return used golf balls if I'm not happy?

Yes. Be happy, or send it back for a full refund. No hidden agenda. Opened bags are OK. You pay return shipping unless the return is because of a GBN grading error—then we cover return shipping.

Are refinished golf balls the same as new golf balls?

No. A refinished ball started as a used ball and was then restored with new paint, branding and clear coat. A recycled ball keeps its original factory finish. Neither should be represented as a new ball.
